The labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them.

To be free, the workers must have choice. To have choice they must retain in their own hands the right to determine under what conditions they will work.

-Samuel Gomper

Unions are not philanthropic organizations that exist in the spirit of "giving." We already "give." We give our labor to an organization for a previously agreed upon wage and under previously agreed upon terms. The true focus of a union is actually to shield workers from the seemingly unending "taking" at the hands of employers. As all of us who labor know, organizations have the tendency to take until nothing is left. Everyone deserves protection from that. Everyone.
